Kansetsu-Waza: Uki-gatame From Juji Gatame — Cross Armlock

Uki-gatame From Juji Gatame — Cross Armlock

Here's an idea for those who spend a lot of time and energy trying to get Juji-Gatame (Cross Armlock). Instead of the arm lock try turning it into a hold down like Uki-Gatame in the video below.

Now I admit that an arm lock is more decisive and after all once Tori has that arm locked setup, it is only a matter of time before Uke has to give in to the arm lock. But what if you don't have that time. What if the clock is against you.

Unless the referee calls "Osaekomi", something they are unlikely to do when waiting for an armlock, you may just run out of time. Whereas, if you don't have time, why not try to turn it into a hold down like Uki-Gatame in the video.

If you turn it into a hold down and you manage to get "Osaekomi" the clock is irrelevant. Even if you only manage to keep "Osaekomi" for 15 seconds, that a Waza-ari. It could still be a winning hold.

Now some may object that a hold-down is more strenuous than getting the arm lock and you may be right, depending on how proficient you are at putting on the arm lock. But if Uke is strong and you are running short on time and need a score, I say go for the hold-down.

Just an opinion.

Kansetsu Waza: Nasty Arm Lock With The Leg

Kansetsu Waza: With Legs and Arms

This is probably one of the nastiest arm locks (Kansetsu Waza) that I have seen. But there is no doubt that if you can lock that arm in before your opponent knows about it you will succeed.

This video starts out with a Sambo competition but then moves to and application of this arm lock (Kansetsu Waza) in a Judo competition.

I really liked watching the Judo player execute this move because it seems to me that there was a whole lot of respect for his opponent.

I might be wrong but it looked to me like Tori (the person executing this play) made sure that he stopped just momentarily, before he completed his roll, to allow his Uke to tap out and get into a roll position. If that was the case I have to say that it was a real act of the Judo Spirit.

In any case, even if I'm imagining what I think I saw, if you are going to execute this Kansetsu Waza you are going to need to practice and your Uke's are not going to want to practice with you if you break their arm. So be gentle with your practice and maybe it will rub off in the execution of the hold in a competition.

Don't forget that the leg has the most powerful muscles in the body and can do some serious damage. But also remember that the knee is definitely not the most powerful joint in your body and you can do yourself some serious damage if you don't practice this carefully.

You don't need me to break this down for you, the video already does that:

Kansetsu Waza: A Judo Standing Armlock Worth Developing

A Standing Armlock That Can be Pulled Off

When I was competing standing armlocks did not break the rules. That is no longer the case which would never have been a problem for me as, whilst I like the idea of a standing armlock was never been able to pull one off in competition. They seem to me however, to be a great tool to develop. Even if only for intere sport traning and selfdefence practice.

This armlock was sent to me some time ago and I really like it Though I never got to use it I thought that I would share it.

The time to use it is when someone has a grip on your left lapel near your collarbone and is holding you fairly close, so their arm is bent at the elbow. Take your left hand and slide it up so your wrist is between his wrist and your body, with your fingers pointed up towards the ceiling (palm facing to your right). This gives uke the feeling that you're resisting the grip, but weakly--so it doesn't seem suspicious, but also doesn't seem threatening.

To do the armlock, quickly turn towards your left and simultaneously slip your right arm up between his elbow and ribs, so your right hand should go up past his shoulder level. Quickly join your hand's palm to palm and straighten your arms at the elbow--you've got him in standing Ude-Garami.

Why Is there no video? Well, I guess I have to make one, one day because I can't find one doing this articular version on line. All of the ones I've found have too much talking and are not the same.

To be fair, only the most inexperienced play would get caught by this but that doesn't mean you can't use it to set someone up for something else.

A couple of important points: the turn is important, as is making sure you get the angle just right, or else uke can escape by just straightening his arm and wriggling away.

One sensei said it was one of his "secret weapons" when he was in tournaments...just about everyone would watch out for his Seoi-Nage, so this was one of his techniques he could pull out of the blue when someone had him too well scouted. :-)

Kansetsu Waza: Mr Komlock's Standing Armlock in Action

A Judo Armlock by Mr Komlock: Excellent Example of A Standing Armlock

This is a video of a Japanese judoka named Koji Komuro (5th dan). He is a full-time instructor at Kodokan Judo Institute. His nickname is Komlock and he is performing a Judo armlock that is an excellent example of a standing armlock.

A past Japanese student Highlighted this particular video to me as an excellent example of the use of a standing armlock and in combination with Tomo nagi.

Often these videos are really difficult to tell what is going on. They tend to be a blur of action and you just have to take on faith that the video is about what the title says. This video is not like that.

In this video, you can clearly see the application of the armlock and most of the movement that leads up to that application.

It's a great show:
