Kansetsu-Waza: Uki-gatame From Juji Gatame — Cross Armlock

Uki-gatame From Juji Gatame — Cross Armlock

Here's an idea for those who spend a lot of time and energy trying to get Juji-Gatame (Cross Armlock). Instead of the arm lock try turning it into a hold down like Uki-Gatame in the video below.

Now I admit that an arm lock is more decisive and after all once Tori has that arm locked setup, it is only a matter of time before Uke has to give in to the arm lock. But what if you don't have that time. What if the clock is against you.

Unless the referee calls "Osaekomi", something they are unlikely to do when waiting for an armlock, you may just run out of time. Whereas, if you don't have time, why not try to turn it into a hold down like Uki-Gatame in the video.

If you turn it into a hold down and you manage to get "Osaekomi" the clock is irrelevant. Even if you only manage to keep "Osaekomi" for 15 seconds, that a Waza-ari. It could still be a winning hold.

Now some may object that a hold-down is more strenuous than getting the arm lock and you may be right, depending on how proficient you are at putting on the arm lock. But if Uke is strong and you are running short on time and need a score, I say go for the hold-down.

Just an opinion.
