An injury to the synovial membrane located in the ankle is known as ankle synovitis. When the synovium gets inflamed, pain and swelling result. This is due to excess fluid that leaks into the joint and ends up blocking nutrients to surrounding areas, as well as the cartilage degrading. Inflammation of this area can also lead to membrane swelling, which then puts additional pressure on joint surfaces. This condition is common among athletes due to quick changes of direction. It can also be due to an infection in the area. Symptoms include joint tightness, a decreased range of motion, and even a loss of function. Treatment includes resting, putting ice on the area, and NSAIDs to aid in reducing inflammation on the synovial membrane.
